When people speak of right and wrong, they are often speaking of the moral implications of an action. There are times when right and wrong are clearly defined. When you give money to a homeless person, that is certainly an act of kindness, but it is probably not very smart business practice. On the other hand, there are times when people seem to think that the law is wrong even though it really isn’t.

There are occasions when things happen in our lives for which we can neither explain nor justify why they happened to us. Perhaps this is why so many people look for the moral high ground to stand upon when they need to justify their actions. It can be very tempting to try to create an ethical system based on fairness and fairness alone.

That ethical system really isn’t fair because, by definition, it doesn’t take into account all of the factors that affect fairness. When you accept that something may not be fair, you open yourself up to accepting that sometimes things just aren’t fair.
